The region’s roadways proved deadly Sunday, as seven people were killed in five accidents from Los Angeles to Riverside.

The carnage began about 1 a.m. when a man, driving east on Jefferson Boulevard near Hoover Street in Los Angeles, was struck by an oncoming car as he made a turn in front of it, Los Angeles Police Sgt. Leslie Wilbanks said.

He was taken to California Hospital Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead. His name was not released pending notification of next of kin.

The driver of the other car also was treated at the hospital for head and foot injuries. She was arrested and charged with drunken driving, Wilbanks said.

Neither driver was wearing seat belts, Wilbanks said.

Almost three hours later, a 30-year-old La Puente man died after being struck by several cars on the 110 Freeway.

The man, whose name was not released Sunday, had been involved in a collision with another car in the northbound lanes of the freeway, north of 51st Street, California Highway Patrol Officer Patrick Kimball said.

He got out of his car and was walking in the fast lane when he was struck by another car and thrown into the southbound fast lane of the freeway, where several other cars hit him, Kimball said.

Shortly after noon Sunday, CHP officers closed the northbound 405 Freeway north of La Tijera Boulevard after a man in a car hit an embankment and was killed, Kimball said.

No one else was hurt in the 12:36 p.m. crash. CHP officials did not release the man’s name Sunday because his next of kin had not been notified, Kimball said.

In Orange, a 23-year-old man was killed when he lost control of his small sports coupe and struck a utility pole, police said.

The accident occurred about 3:50 a.m. in the 2600 block of North Glassell Street near Fletcher Avenue. Paramedics pronounced the man dead at the scene.

Police were withholding the identity of the driver until his relatives were notified, and were still investigating the cause of the accident late Sunday.

In Riverside County, a head-on collision of two cars left three people dead, and four more, including two children, in critical condition at area hospitals, county fire officials said.

The 2:24 p.m. crash occurred on the Ramona Expressway at 5th Street, in the town of Nuevo.

The names of those killed in the accident were not immediately available Sunday.
