Cowboys’ Owens is again a spectator

Terrell Owens didn’t take part in the Dallas Cowboys’ two practice sessions Wednesday, a day after getting a break to rest his sore hamstring.

Owens wore shorts and spent part of the morning practice working out with trainers, at one point doing high leg kicks alongside Flozell Adams, the 6-foot-7, 340-pound offensive tackle who got a break from practice while recovering from arthroscopic knee surgery this summer.

Owens stood with other offensive players during team drills.

Coach Wade Phillips said Owens was sore -- not injured.

“He doesn’t have a hamstring problem,” Phillips said.

The New York Giants are not going to renegotiate Michael Strahan’s $4-million contract to persuade the seven-time Pro Bowl defensive end to stop mulling retirement and play this season.

“He is under contract and I think you all know what our position is on that,” co-owner John Mara said.

The team is talking with veteran defensive end Simeon Rice, who was released last week by Tampa Bay.

Five Washington Redskins starters -- Clinton Portis, Chris Samuels, Marcus Washington, Santana Moss and Randy Thomas -- are sidelined or are having their practice time curtailed less than one week into training camp.

Running back Portis was out for the second day in a row, reduced to riding a stationary bicycle because of swelling and soreness because of tendinitis in his right knee.

Pittsburgh Steelers running back Willie Parker sat out practice for the second day in a row because of a sore knee and is not expected to play in the Hall of Fame exhibition Sunday night against the New Orleans Saints in Canton, Ohio.

Parker has some swelling in his left knee and the Steelers are going to be cautious with their top running back.

Indianapolis Colts owner Jim Irsay said that he expected to release former Pro Bowl tackle Corey Simon within the next few days, ending months of speculation concerning Simon’s future with the defending Super Bowl champions.

Simon did not pass his physical over the weekend.

Randy Moss left the New England Patriots’ practice with an apparent upper leg injury.

During a passing drill, Moss reached into the end zone for a ball thrown by Tom Brady.

The pass was incomplete and Moss immediately went to the sideline.

Suspended Cincinnati Bengals linebacker Odell Thurman has been ordered to appear in court for allegedly violating probation on his drunk-driving conviction.

A Hamilton County probation officer said Thurman failed to show for a scheduled meeting on July 24.

Thurman then was ordered to appear before Municipal Court judge John Burlew on Aug. 21 to explain himself.

If the judge decides Thurman violated probation, the linebacker could be sent to jail.
