Lock-n-Lift can opener

Share

Can openers, along with toasters and bicycle pumps, are perhaps some of the finest achievements of the mechanical age. Armed with a trusty opener, you can transform a pantry filled with canned goods into an endless array of dinners. Without one, you’re stuck with a room full of free weights.

Although the electric can opener is a useful invention, there’s nothing like a simple hand-operated device. This nifty opener from the Zurich, Switzerland-based company Zyliss has nonslip handles, a locking mechanism for safe storage and a sweet, smooth blade. There’s also a surprisingly powerful little magnet built into the underside. Just open your can of cannelini beans or albacore bathed in olive oil and angle the magnet down to the detached lid. The metal top lifts out of the can with no mess -- or fear of cutting your fingers. It’s pretty good at picking up paper clips too.

Zyliss Lock-n-Lift can opener. About $14.50 at Amazon.com, A Store for Cooks in Laguna Niguel, California School of Culinary Arts Campus Cookstore in Pasadena, Cookin’ Stuff in Torrance, Star Restaurant Equipment in Van Nuys, Sur La Table stores and Whole Foods markets.
