* Boston 14, at Chicago 2: Tim Wakefield yielded three hits in seven shutout innings and joined teammate Josh Beckett as the major leagues’ only 16-game winners. Wakefield (16-10) gave up a leadoff single to Jerry Owens in the first and not another hit until Jermaine Dye doubled and Danny Richar singled in the seventh. The White Sox fell 17 games under .500 for the first time since 1999.

* Minnesota 8, at Baltimore 1: Torii Hunter hit a three-run homer to spoil the major league debut of Radhames Liz, who took a two-hitter into the sixth inning and was still throwing 97-mph fastballs before Hunter hit an 0-1 pitch deep into the left-field seats.

* at Tampa Bay 14, Oakland 3: Scott Kazmir’s 13 strikeouts broke the previous team mark shared by James Shields and Dan Wheeler. Kazmir retired 16 consecutive batters from the second to the seventh inning.

* New York 7, at Detroit 2: Johnny Damon homered and tripled, Melky Cabrera added a three-run triple and Chien-Ming Wang delivered eight effective innings for the Yankees. Carlos Guillen’s three-run homer in the 11th inning gave the Tigers a 9-6 victory Saturday morning in a game that lasted longer than the 4-hour 1-minute rain delay that preceded it.
