* at Kansas City 5, Detroit 0: Esteban German hit a go-ahead triple in a five-run first inning against Andrew Miller, and the Royals handed the Tigers only their second shutout this year while dropping them a season-high tying 4 1/2 games behind AL Central-leading Cleveland. Miller (5-5) got only two outs in his 13th major league start, giving up five runs, five hits, two walks and two hit batters.

* Tampa Bay 5, at Baltimore 4 (12 innings): Dioner Navarro singled in the tiebreaking run in the 12th inning, and the Devil Rays took advantage of another meltdown by the Baltimore bullpen in handing the Orioles their eighth straight loss. Joel Guzman was on second after hitting a chopper that resulted in a wild throw by Melvin Mora. Baltimore led, 4-1, in the eighth inning before Tampa Bay rallied to tie the score.

* at Texas 5, Chicago 4 (11 innings): Sammy Sosa hit a sacrifice fly in the bottom of the 11th inning to lift the Rangers. Sosa hit a fly ball to center and Jerry Owens made a diving catch, but the fielder had no chance to get up and throw Ian Kinsler out at the plate. Sosa had tied the score with a pinch-hit RBI double in the seventh. Jim Thome went three for five with a pair of RBI singles for the White Sox, who have lost 15 of 18.

* at Oakland 5, Toronto 4 (11 innings): Jack Hannahan hit a game-ending single to drive in Marco Scutaro with two outs in the 11th inning to help the A’s end a five-game losing streak. Hannahan’s big hit came after Huston Street blew a 4-2 lead in the ninth by giving up solo home runs to Lyle Overbay and pinch-hitter Matt Stairs -- the first time the closer has given up two homers in an outing in his career.

* at New York 4, Boston 3: Roger Clemens, who earned 192 of his 354 career wins with the Red Sox from 1984 to ‘96, struck out two and improved to 3-0 in his last four starts in beating his former team.

* at Cleveland 4, Minnesota 3: C.C. Sabathia, vying to become the Indians’ first 20-game winner since Gaylord Perry in 1974, becames the first Cleveland pitcher to give up two runs or fewer in six straight starts since Orel Hershiser in 1996.

* Angels 8, at Seattle 2: Felix Hernandez (10-7) gave up hits to eight of the Angels’ first 16 batters in losing for the first time in seven starts since July 22.
