From the Associated Press

* Boston 2, at Toronto 1: Chuck Kobasew and Dennis Wideman scored goals and Alex Auld earned his first victory with the Bruins. The Maple Leafs, who had won four in a row, outshot the Bruins but solved Auld only once.

* Carolina 5, at Montreal 1: Ray Whitney scored twice and Matt Cullen had three assists to lead the Hurricanes. Andrei Kostitsyn scored a power-play goal in the second, the lone tally by the Canadiens, who have lost six of eight (2-5-1). Cam Ward made 35 saves for Carolina, 2-2 on its five-game trip that will end today in Detroit.

* at Washington 6, Atlanta 3: Nicklas Backstrom and Jeff Schultz scored a minute apart in the first period, and the Capitals got two goals from Mike Green. It was only the second time Washington scored as many as six goals; the other was in a 7-1 rout of Toronto on Oct. 29.

* Minnesota 2, at Columbus 1: Brian Rolston’s third-period goal and Niklas Backstrom’s 31 saves helped the Wild get a rare win in Columbus. Rolston snapped a 1-1 tie with a hard slap shot from the top of the left circle that slipped inside the near post and past goaltender Pascal Leclaire at the 2:22 mark of the third period. Minnesota had only one win in its 11 previous trips to Nationwide Arena, going 1-7-3 -- its worst record in any visiting arena.

* N.Y. Islanders 3, at Tampa Bay 2: Mike Sillinger scored a power-play goal with 27.7 seconds left in overtime and the Islanders stopped a five-game losing streak. Tampa Bay got two third-period goals from Brad Richards.

* Pittsburgh 2, at Vancouver 1: Rookie defenseman Kris Letang scored his second consecutive shootout winner in the sixth round. Letang, who beat Miikka Kiprusoff in the shootout to secure a victory in Calgary on Thursday, made a strong forehand deke to easily beat a sprawled Roberto Luongo.

* Buffalo 7, at San Jose 1: Ales Kotalik, Tim Connolly, Michael Ryan and Paul Gaustad scored in the second period and the Sabres added to the Sharks’ home woes. San Jose has only four home wins, matching Washington for fewest in the league.

* Phoenix 4, at Kings 2: Radim Vrbata scored on a power play and the Coyotes ended a four-game road losing streak.

* at Nashville 4, Ducks 2: Jordin Tootoo recorded a “Gordie Howe hat trick” with a goal, assist, and a fight in the Predators’ victory.
