Hollendorfer’s sights set on 5,000

Thoroughbred racing in California will resume today after a short break and a lot of eyes will be focused on the fortunes of trainer Jerry Hollendorfer.

Long the kingpin in the northern part of the state, Hollendorfer is on the cusp of a milestone. He is two wins shy of 5,000. Only three trainers -- Dale Baird, Jack Van Berg and King Leatherbury -- have reached such heights.

Looking to add to his total of 4,998 wins, Hollendorfer will be well represented this afternoon at both Hollywood Park and Golden Gate Fields.

In his usual spot atop the trainer standings at the Albany track, Hollendorfer is scheduled to have five starters at Golden Gate and three more at Hollywood Park.

Hollendorfer, in a three-way tie for fourth with Jeff Mullins and Mike Puype in the Hollywood Park trainer standings, will send out recent claim Turkus Quercus in the fifth, Tranquilo in the eighth and D Pirates Marker in the ninth, which is the $100,000 Cat’s Cradle Handicap.

Owned by Halo Farms, D Pirates Marker, who will be ridden by leading jockey Garrett Gomez, has won three of five starts in Inglewood, including an allowance victory Nov. 15. She will break from the outside in the field of eight California-bred fillies and mares going 7 1/2 furlongs.

At Golden Gate, Hollendorfer’s starters are Sweet Addition in the second, Young And Fresh in the third, Honour An M.D. in the fifth, Tail Spin Topper in the seventh and Very Persuasive in the eighth.

This is the penultimate day of the Hollywood Park autumn meet.

Saturday is the closer and the 11-race program will be highlighted by the $750,000 Hollywood CashCall Futurity, a Grade I for 2-year-olds at 1 1/16 miles.

Fourteen horses were entered in the Futurity, including Hollywood Prevue winner Massive Drama and Real Quiet winner Colonel John.
