O.C. chief interviewed for L.A. post
The chief administrator in Orange County is in the running to head Los Angeles County’s government, he confirmed Saturday.
Orange County Chief Executive Officer Tom Mauk was interviewed Thursday by the L.A. County Board of Supervisors to replace retiring Chief Administrative Officer David Janssen.
“I have talked to them, and I would expect Monday or Tuesday to talk to them again, and I hope to have the opportunity to serve as Los Angeles County CEO,” Mauk, 63, said in a phone interview. “The board needs to make the final decision, and I can’t say much more than that.”
Earlier this month, Hennepin County Administrator Sandra L. Vargas in Minneapolis was offered the job but declined.
The chief administrative officer is appointed by the supervisors and is responsible for a $21-billion budget that provides law enforcement, criminal justice, healthcare, welfare and other services to millions in the nation’s most populous county.
Janssen retired after more than 10 years on the job. Another finalist, Michael Henry, L.A. County’s director of personnel, withdrew Jan. 5.
