Walton to be out for at least a week

So how were the Lakers doing a day after an embarrassing loss to Charlotte?

“I hope they’re doing bad,” Coach Phil Jackson said gruffly. “They should be because we’re really disappointed. The fact that we got beat that badly in overtime when it’s our court, that was disappointing.”

It wasn’t a pretty sight Saturday at the Lakers’ training facility. Jackson proctored a film session that can politely be described as detailed, followed by a practice without another starter and more questions about a team that can’t seem to beat anybody below it in the standings.

The Lakers are 27-16 overall, but 2-8 against Charlotte, Memphis, New Orleans, Milwaukee, Portland and Seattle.

“The positive is that we don’t play none of those teams in the playoffs,” Kobe Bryant said. “All the teams that we tend to play well against are future playoff opponents.”

One of the teams the Lakers have done well against, San Antonio, hits town today, although the Lakers will be without their starting small forward.

Luke Walton will be sidelined one to two weeks because of a moderately sprained right ankle sustained in the third quarter of the Lakers’ 106-97 overtime loss to Charlotte. He came down on the foot of Andrew Bynum and immediately left the court, becoming the latest Laker to spend bonus time with trainer Gary Vitti.

The Lakers begin an eight-game trip Tuesday in New York, with Walton possibly returning halfway through it.

“The trainers are very pleased that there isn’t a lot of swelling,” Jackson said. “There’s obviously some soreness to it because it was a major sprain, but we’re hopeful that it’s going to be a limited amount of time.”

Two more items of note from Friday’s game: Turnovers and the absence of Vladimir Radmanovic.

Bryant had nine turnovers and Lamar Odom had six in his first game back, much to Jackson’s displeasure.

“You can’t have your two best players have 15 turnovers ... and survive,” Jackson said. “They have responsibility with the ball with as many opportunities as they have, and when you have that kind of turnovers against a team that converts, it’s putting a tremendous pressure on your defense.”

Radmanovic did not play against Charlotte, the first time he did not leave the bench in a game this season. He sprained his hand during warmups, Jackson said, but was available if necessary.

“Sometimes it happens like that,” Jackson said, shrugging.

Center Kwame Brown, out since Dec. 31 because of a severely sprained left ankle, did a light workout Saturday and said he hoped to return halfway through the upcoming trip, perhaps earlier.... Bryant on the losses to losing teams affecting the Lakers down the road: “The way Dallas and Phoenix are playing, you’d have to reel off a bunch of games in a row to fight for those first two [playoff] positions. You’re talking about third through fifth, something like that possibly. Nothing we can do about it now, just try to correct it going forward.”
