Mini-mall, mega crowd
CAN a mini-mall be too good for its own good? That’s the question facing the Key Center, on the crammed corner of Hyperion Avenue and Glendale Boulevard in Silver Lake. Parking at the mini-mall, which only has 20 spaces, has always been sticky. The lineup of businesses is unusually strong: always-packed Bonsoir Nails, a popular tanning salon, a trendy shoe store, a bustling pet-supply store and an optometrist. Only the Chinese restaurant in the airy corner space seemed slow -- thankfully, as far as patrons of the other businesses were concerned. It’s an unwritten L.A. law: Every mini-mall needs one, and preferably two, duds.
Then, last month, a Pinkberry opened where the restaurant was. And now, on weekend afternoons, drivers seeking a spot need a real chill pill. The center has valet parking Saturdays, but even the valets seem frustrated.
