It’s show time for completed 210 Freeway
The wait is finally over.
After decades of lobbying and four years of construction, the final 7 1/4 miles of the 210 Freeway will open to traffic at 10 a.m. today.
The link completes a freeway that hugs the foothills from the northern reaches of the San Fernando Valley through the San Gabriel Valley and into the Inland Empire.
The final stretch has been hailed by area officials not only because it offers a new route for commuters headed into Los Angeles County but because ithas sparked a development and business boom in several San Bernardino County cities, including Fontana and Rialto.
The extension will stretch between Alder Avenue in Rialto to the connector with Highway 30 in San Bernardino. Each side of the extension has three travel lanes and a carpool lane.
On- and off-ramps will be at Alder Avenue, Ayala Drive and Riverside Avenue in Rialto and at State Street in San Bernardino.
The freeway opening will be supervised by officials from San Bernardino, the California Department of Transportation and the California Highway Patrol.
Construction, which cost about $233 million and began in 2003, will continue for several months. Until fly-over ramps are built to connect the 210 to the 215 Freeway, drivers should use established detours, officials said.
