Authorities seek identity of man shot by deputy
San Bernardino County sheriff’s deputies are trying to identify a man who was hit during an exchange of shots with an off-duty deputy around 1 a.m. Monday after the man crashed his car on westbound Interstate 10.
The deputy called dispatchers after watching the man’s car go out of control, hit a dirt embankment and stop near Wabash Avenue.
The man fled and the deputy chased him. When the deputy identified himself as an officer, the man pulled a semi-automatic handgun and began shooting, according to a sheriff’s spokeswoman. The officer was not hit and returned fire, striking the man several times. He was taken to Loma Linda University Medical Center.
The man went straight into surgery and gave no information to deputies.
