The San Diego Padres lost All-Star starter Chris Young early and blew another late lead, but still held on to win.

San Diego ended its four-game losing streak, thanks to a heads-up play by second baseman Geoff Blum, which sparked the Padres past the Colorado Rockies, 5-3, on Tuesday night.

The win was tempered by the loss of Young, who retired all six batters he faced but strained an abdominal muscle on a pitch to Garrett Atkins in the second inning. He came out for the third inning and threw a few warmups before being pulled.

In a case where Colorado leadoff batter Willy Taveras’ speed actually hurt the Rockies, Blum bobbled the transfer to his bare hand of the speedster’s grounder in the seventh and threw to third base to nail Ryan Spilborghs, whose two-run double had tied it at 3-3.

“I didn’t think I had enough time to get Willy,” Blum said. “I had no shot, but I took a peek at third base and saw Spilborghs well off the bag. Kevin [Kouzmanoff] was waiting at the bag for the ball and I threw it there.”

Spilborghs had no chance to get back and was tagged for the final out of the inning.
