City backs bill to open police discipline hearings
The City Council voted 12 to 1 Tuesday to support a state Senate bill that would open police disciplinary hearings to the public.
The California Supreme Court ruled in August that police disciplinary records could be kept secret from the public.
Senate Bill 1019, by Majority Leader Gloria Romero (D-Los Angeles), has passed the Senate and is headed to the Assembly, where police unions are expected to fight the bill.
Councilman Dennis Zine, a longtime police officer and a former police union official, cast Tuesday’s dissenting vote.
