From Times Staff Reports

Fire Department officials said Monday the city recently increased the number of phone lines available to its reverse 911 system, which notifies residents of emergencies.

Fire officials told the City Council’s public safety committee that the updated system can make 6,000 calls per hour, and more if extra phone lines are leased. Councilman Jack Weiss, the committee chairman, asked the department to report back on what needed to be done to further increase the number of calls in a citywide emergency.

Such a system was used throughout San Diego County to notify residents of evacuations because of the recent wildfires.
