Fullerton tops Bakersfield

Josh Akognon scored 22 points to lead Cal State Fullerton to a 92-75 victory over Cal State Bakersfield, which made its NCAA Division I debut Friday in Fullerton.

Akognon, a transfer from Washington State, made six of 13 shots from three-point range in his debut for the Titans (1-0). Frank Robinson added 21 points, nine rebounds, five assists and four steals.

Terrence Johns, last season’s California junior college player of the year, had 26 points and 10 rebounds for the Roadrunners (0-1), who won NCAA Division II championships in 1993, 1994 and 1997.

UC Santa Barbara 92, Northwestern State 71 -- Alex Harris scored 17 of his game-high 27 points in the second half for UC Santa Barbara in the first round of the Basketball Travelers Classic in Stanford. Ivan Elliott scored 17 points as the Gauchos won their fifth consecutive season opener. Chris Devine added 13 points. Damon Jones made all five of his three-point tries in the first half and finished with 17 points for the Demons, who played the earliest opener -- by one day -- in school history.

at UC Irvine 74, Loyola Marymount 61 -- Patrick Sanders had 12 points and nine rebounds to lead UC Irvine (1-0). Sanders scored all of his points in the first half as the Anteaters made 14 of their first 17 field goals and went on to build a 20-point lead with 7:08 left in the first half. The Lions (0-1) shot 52% (13 for 25) in the second half.

Massachusetts 90, Cal Poly 64 -- Ricky Harris scored 23 points to lead Massachusetts in the opening game of the BTI Tipoff Tourney in Cedar Falls, Iowa. The Minutemen (1-0) took control of a close game with a 24-2 run in the second half. Matt Hanson and Lorenzo Keeler each scored nine points to lead Cal Poly (0-1).
