Tresvant lifts Northridge

Deon Tresvant scored 14 of his 20 points in the second half, Tremaine Townsend had 14 points and nine rebounds and Cal State Northridge beat Pepperdine, 97-89, Saturday night in a nonconference game.

Tyrone Shelley made six three-point baskets and scored a career-best 34 points for the host Waves (0-4).

Josh Jenkins’ layup capped a 9-1 spurt and gave the Matadors a 17-point lead with seven minutes to play. Jenkins finished with 15 points and six assists.

Jonathan Heard scored 13 for Northridge (2-0), which out-rebounded Pepperdine, 50-43.

Malcolm Thomas had 11 points and 13 rebounds for the Waves.

Long Beach State 66, Idaho State 61 -- Donavan Morris scored a career-high 20 points and had 10 rebounds to give the host 49ers (1-2) their first win under Coach Dan Monson.

Brian Freeman made two free throws with 19 seconds left in overtime to give the 49ers a 64-61 lead. Matt Stucki, who led the Bengals (0-3) with 19 points, then missed a three-point shot with 2.4 seconds left.

Freeman’s basket with 11 seconds left in regulation tied the score, 56-56, and forced overtime.

UC Irvine 70, Utah State 51 -- Brett Lauer scored a career-high 14 points and Kevin Bland had 15 for the host Anteaters (2-1).

Lauer made a three-point basket with 5:26 left in the first half to end an Anteaters’ scoring drought that lasted nearly 7 1/2 minutes. Lauer’s basket started a 14-0 run for Irvine.

The Aggies (2-3) were led by guard Jacyee Carroll with 23 points.

Cal State Fullerton 78, Southern Utah 63 -- Josh Akognon scored 23 points and Kenneth Alexander had 17 for the Titans (3-0), who spoiled the home debut of the Thunderbirds’ first-year Coach Roger Reid.

Akognon made five three-pointers. The Titans didn’t trail after the first two minutes and led the Thunderbirds (1-2) by 15 points at halftime.

Loyola Marymount 83, Presbyterian 76 -- Freshman Orlando Johnson had 23 points and seven rebounds to lead the Lions (1-3) in the Basketball Travelers Invitational at Albuquerque.

Pat Kiscaden tied a career high with 27 points for the Blue Hose (0-4), playing its first season in Division I.
