Ward will not play against Seahawks

Pittsburgh Steelers wide receiver Hines Ward will sit out his second game in a row on Sunday because of a right knee injury.

Ward has been unable to practice since he was hurt Sept. 23 against the San Francisco 49ers.

Before sitting out last weekend’s 21-14 loss at Arizona, Ward had sat out games only three times because of injury in his 10-year NFL career.

He will sit out the Steelers’ first game against Seattle since he was the most valuable player of their 21-10 victory over the Seahawks in the 2005 season’s Super Bowl.

The Steelers are off next week, and Ward said it might be wise to rest again this week so the injury has more time to heal.

Ward may not be the only notable Steelers player held out. Nose tackle Casey Hampton (hamstring) and safety Troy Polamalu (rib cage cartilage) did not practice all week and are listed as questionable.

Typically, the Steelers don’t play any player who doesn’t practice during the week.

But Coach Mike Tomlin said Polamalu might play, and Hampton said he would be a game-time decision.

Washington Redskins receiver Santana Moss is listed as doubtful for Sunday’s game against the Detroit Lions. Moss hurt his groin during the fourth quarter of a loss to the New York Giants two weeks ago and has not practiced since. The Redskins were off last week.

Giants defensive end Osi Umenyiora sat out his second consecutive practice because of a sore left knee.

Umenyiora, the NFC’s defensive player of the week after he sacked Philadelphia’s Donovan McNabb a team-record six times and forced two fumbles during Sunday night’s game, has said he still expected to play against the New York Jets on Sunday.

Umenyiora initially injured the knee during the Giants opening game at Dallas on Sept. 9. He and wide receiver Plaxico Burress (ankle) were both listed as questionable on the team’s injury report.

Jets starting safety Erik Coleman is doubtful for Sunday’s game because of a concussion.

Coleman was injured during the last week’s 17-14 loss at Buffalo but didn’t show symptoms of a concussion until after the game. He did not practice all week and was listed as doubtful, but not out, on the team’s injury report.

Carolina Panthers quarterback Jake Delhomme did not practice again and is listed as doubtful for Sunday’s game against the New Orleans Saints. Delhomme hasn’t thrown a football since straining his right elbow Sept. 23 against Atlanta.

Buffalo Bills receiver Peerless Price’s season is probably over after he was scheduled to undergo surgery to repair a disk in his neck. Coach Dick Jauron said the team would put Price on injured reserve, making him the ninth Bills player -- and fourth starter -- to go on the season-ending list five weeks into the campaign.

San Diego Chargers rookie wide receiver Craig Davis could sit out Sunday’s game at Denver because of a sprained ankle.

Coach Norv Turner said that Davis’ availability will be a game-time decision. Davis is listed as questionable on the injury report.

Broncos receiver Javon Walker will not play against the Chargers, Coach Mike Shanahan said. Walker still has swelling in his surgically repaired right knee.
