Washington Wizards center Etan Thomas underwent open-heart surgery at the Mayo Clinic in Minnesota to repair a leak of the aortic valve, an irregularity discovered during a routine physical before the start of training camp.

The Wizards, citing Thomas’ right to privacy, made no statement other than to acknowledge the surgery took place. The team hoped to provide details today after consulting with Thomas’ doctor.

Memphis’ Damon Stoudamire, who has been fighting misdemeanor charges of possession of marijuana and drug paraphernalia since July 2003, will have the case dismissed if he provides proof of two more drug-free urine tests over the next six months, avoids any criminal convictions and reports any subsequent arrests immediately, according to a deal reached by the player’s attorneys and Pima County (Ariz.) officials.
