* Toronto 6, at Boston 4: Vernon Wells broke out of a slump with a tiebreaking homer in the ninth to help the Blue Jays end the Red Sox’s four-game winning streak. Wells connected for a two-run shot after Hideki Okajima (3-2) hit leadoff batter Gregg Zaun with a pitch and John McDonald sacrificed.

* Cleveland 6, at Minnesota 2: The Twins’ reign atop the American League Central is all but over after being swept twice by the Indians in the last 10 games. Cleveland has won seven in a row against the defending division champions and 11 of 12 games overall. The Indians lead the Twins by 12 1/2 games.

* at New York 10, Seattle 2: Joba Chamberlain (1-0) pitched a 1-2-3 seventh in relief of Phil Hughes, throwing 100-mph heat to win in his first major league decision. Chamberlain hasn’t given up a run in 12 1/3 innings over 10 games -- the longest scoreless streak at the start of a Yankees career since Jim Bouton’s 15 innings in 1962. “We’ll allow him to give up one next year,” Manager Joe Torre said.

* at Detroit 2, Chicago 1 (11 innings): Timo Perez singled off the right-center field wall with two outs in the 11th inning. Mike Hessman homered for Detroit, which stayed seven games behind the first-place Cleveland Indians in the AL Central and 3 1/2 back of the New York Yankees in the wild-card race.

* at Texas 3, Kansas City 2: Vicente Padilla gave up two hits in six scoreless innings and Hank Blalock had two hits and two runs batted in. Padilla (5-9) struck out five and walked two. The Royals got only one runner as far as third base against him.

* at Tampa Bay 17, Baltimore 2: Carlos Pena homered twice, including a grand slam, and drove in a team-record seven runs.

* at Oakland 6, Angels 2: Donnie Murphy had a career-high three hits and two RBIs for Oakland.
