Ray Rice became the career rushing leader at No. 15 Rutgers, and still had to share the spotlight with his defense.

Rice rushed for 175 yards and scored three touchdowns, and the Scarlet Knights intercepted three passes and made a big fourth-quarter stand to hold off Navy, 41-24, on Friday night at Piscataway, N.J.

Rice scored on runs of four and two yards and caught a 22-yard touchdown pass from Mike Teel late in the first half. He has gained 3,273 yards rushing in his career, breaking the school record of 3,114 set by Terrell Willis (1993-95).

Teel, who completed 14 of 19 passes for 266 yards, also threw a 12-yard touchdown pass to Shamar Graves and clinched the victory with a 53-yard touchdown pass to Kenny Britt with 9:05 to play.

Kaipo-Noa Kaheaku-Enhada threw a three-yard touchdown pass to Reggie Campbell and scored on a two-yard run, but he became the first Navy quarterback in 10 years to throw three interceptions in a game.

South Carolina defensive end Jordin Lindsay had an NCAA eligibility appeal turned down, meaning he won’t be able to play this season.

Athletic department spokesman Steve Fink said that Lindsay, a senior, would remain on scholarship with the team and would take this as a redshirt season.

Lindsay did not play in the season-opening 28-14 victory over Louisiana Lafayette while awaiting a final decision on his academic status.

Boston College defensive tackle B.J. Raji will be a redshirt this season after the NCAA denied an appeal to restore his eligibility.

The school last week had said Raji, who started 24 of the Eagles’ last 25 games, would be ineligible because of academic reasons.
