Jaguars… 13 Falcons… 7
JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- A tough defense and an efficient David Garrard helped the Jacksonville Jaguars defeat the Atlanta Falcons, 13-7, Sunday.
The Jaguars sacked Joey Harrington seven times and held the Falcons under 100 yards rushing. Atlanta’s biggest problem came on special teams, however, where rookie Matt Prater missed two field-goal tries and is one for four this season.
Prater’s second miss Sunday would have given the Falcons (0-2) a 10-3 lead. Instead, Garrard drove the Jaguars (1-1) on consecutive scoring drives to put the team ahead for good.
Garrard was four for four for 79 yards, capping the first drive with a 14-yard touchdown pass to Reggie Williams.
John Carney, signed this week to replace the injured Josh Scobee, didn’t have the same issues as Prater. Carney gave the Jaguars an early lead with a 35-yard field goal in the first quarter and made one from 26 yards with 3 minutes 39 seconds remaining to make it 13-7.
Jacksonville’s defense did the rest, stopping Atlanta’s final drive with another sack.
