On the Web

This week at latimes.com/books, Sonja Bolle devotes her Word Play column to a consideration of environmental books for kids. These include “An Inconvenient Truth: The Crisis of Global Warming” by Al Gore, adapted by Jane O’Connor; “The Down-to-Earth Guide to Global Warming” by Laurie David and Cambria Gordon; “The Sky’s Not Falling!: Why It’s OK to Chill About Global Warming” by Holly Fretwell; “Tracking Trash: Flotsam, Jetsam and the Science of Ocean Motion” by Loree Griffin Burns; and “50 Simple Things Kids Can Do to Save the Earth” by the EarthWorks Group. The study of global warming, Bolle notes, has become something of a growth industry for the school-age set, but the more our kids learn about the state of the Earth, the more they have to worry about. The idea here is to provide children with information and strategies for engagement so they won’t feel powerless and overwhelmed.
