NFL draft

OAKLAND: The Raiders are in an intriguing spot. They pick fourth and could help themselves in a lot of ways. They could be in position to take a dominating defensive tackle such as Glenn Dorsey; a devastating pass rusher like Vernon Gholston or Chris Long -- the son of Raiders great Howie Long -- or blistering-fast running back Darren McFadden. Each would make an immediate impact for a rebuilding franchise.

KANSAS CITY: Minnesota has reached a deal to trade its first-round pick and two third-round picks for Chiefs defensive end Jared Allen. The Chiefs could use the fifth pick on another pass rusher or an offensive lineman such as Boise State’s Ryan Clady. Don’t rule out the Chiefs trading down to get a good cornerback and receiver, both of which are needs.

SAN DIEGO: Although running back had been a position of major strength in recent years, the Chargers now need help in that department, with Michael Turner gone and LaDainian Tomlinson encountering knee problems in the playoffs. The Chargers also could do some depth-building at tackle and defensive tackle. General Manager A.J. Smith has done a masterful job with the draft in recent years, so he’s worth watching.

DENVER: The Broncos need a defensive tackle but won’t be able to get one of the elite ones with the 12th pick. They should have a chance to get a good offensive tackle, however, and will take a hard look at Vanderbilt’s Chris Williams, Jay Cutler’s college teammate. The Broncos also need some depth at linebacker and at safety, where John Lynch will be around to tutor an up-and-coming prospect.
