Beaten cyclist in grave condition

A bicyclist who was assaulted and left bloodied on a city street this week remains hospitalized in grave condition, authorities said Friday.

The injuries to the unidentified man’s upper body and head were so severe that police initially thought he had been struck by a hit-and-run driver. Officers later concluded that damage to his bicycle was inconsistent with having been struck by a vehicle.

Police responded about 4:30 a.m. Monday to a report of a body in the 800 block of East Stanford Street.

Officers suspect that the man, who remains unconscious, may have been robbed.
