* at No. 22 Penn State 66, Coastal Carolina 10: Evan Royster ran for three touchdowns and Derrick Williams had an 89-yard kickoff return for another score at State College as Joe Paterno tied Bobby Bowden atop the career list for major-college coaches with his 373rd victory.

* at Minnesota 31, Northern Illinois 27: Duane Bennett pushed his way in for a one-yard score with 22 seconds left to lift the Gophers at Minneapolis. Coach Tim Brewster, who doubled his career victory total after a 1-11 season, told his team to go for it on fourth and one at the three-yard line after calling his final timeout with 38 seconds remaining. Bennett charged forward for two yards on that play, before muscling in for the winner, his second touchdown of the game.

* at Iowa 46, Maine 3: Shonn Greene, who missed last season because of academic issues at a junior college, ran for 109 yards and a touchdown, and freshman Jewel Hampton added two late scores for the Hawkeyes at Iowa City.
