Samuels out for the season

Five-time Pro Bowl left tackle Chris Samuels is out for the season because of a torn right triceps, the latest blow for a Washington Redskins team that has sunk to last place in the NFC East.

Samuels was injured in Sunday night’s 24-10 loss to the Baltimore Ravens. Right tackle Jon Jansen was also hurt in the game and an MRI exam Monday revealed a sprained medial collateral ligament in his left knee.

The Redskins said Jansen has not been ruled out for next week’s game against the Bengals.

Coach Jim Zorn said second-year player Stephon Heyer will start the rest of the season at left tackle in place of Samuels.

“We can’t get any more injuries,” Zorn said. “We just flat can’t. They cannot get hurt. That’s my mandate for them today.”

The Redskins (7-6) have lost four of five and are in an offensive free fall, scoring only 33 points in the four losses. They rank 29th in scoring.

Kicker Andersen retires

Kicker Morten Andersen, the NFL’s career leading scorer, is retiring because of knee problems.

Andersen, 48, scored 2,544 points during his 25-year career. He played for the Atlanta Falcons the last two seasons but wasn’t able to get a contract this year. Andersen said Monday he has given up his search and his NFL career.

“I realized I no longer can train in an optimal way because of my knees,” Andersen said. “So I am retiring.”

Detroit Lions quarterback Daunte Culpepper had an MRI exam on his shoulder, leading to doubt he will play Sunday at Indianapolis. Coach Rod Marinelli said the team would wait for results of the exam before exploring other options for a starting quarterback. . . . Veteran right tackle Mark Tauscher will sit out Green Bay’s last three games of the season because of a left knee injury. . . . Rookie Peyton Hillis has a torn right hamstring and is done for the season, becoming the fifth Broncos tailback to go on injured reserve. . . . The Jacksonville Jaguars put reserve defensive back Chad Nkang on injured reserve because of a shoulder injury and signed rookie Kennard Cox.
