The Hollywood recycling center

The purpose of Hollywood of course is to provide entertainment. Remakes of popular movies may be sure-fire hits, but why are remakes being made instead of making movies based on stories that have not been filmed?

Could copyright have anything do with the lack of written content moving to film? This is pure speculation on my part, but I would think that Hollywood would be craving new content instead of recycling old content.

I woke up this Sunday morning to the paper and grew excited when I saw the cover of the Calendar section. I’m a huge science-fiction fan and, as a black woman, I don’t get to share my interests as much with friends who prefer crime, comedy or romance movies.

The article did a great job of zeroing in on the heavyweights: “Star Wars,” “Star Trek” and “Battlestar Galactica.” I also learned some new trivia -- I had no idea “Star Trek” was originally pitched as “ ‘Wagon Train’ to the stars.”

I’m wondering if this can be an extension of more sci-fi articles to come. As Geoff Boucher mentioned, Hollywood has a strong tie to book publishing. Movies like “Minority Report,” “Children of Men,” “Blade Runner,” “Dune,” etc. were all derived from books. I’d love to see more articles on this in connection with how Hollywood often drives the book publishing field.
