Roddick gets past Guccione

Top-seeded Andy Roddick had to work harder than expected to beat Chris Guccione, 6-3, 6-7 (3), 7-6 (5), on Wednesday night in the first round of the SAP Open in San Jose.

Robby Ginepri upset eighth-seeded Kristof Vliegen, 6-2, 6-3, and fourth-seeded Radek Stepanek ousted Bobby Reynolds, 7-5, 7-6 (5).

Top-seeded Rafael Nadal beat Dmitry Tursunov, 6-4, 6-4, in the first round of the ABN Amro tournament in Rotterdam, Netherlands. Sixth-seeded Andy Murray lost, 7-5, 6-3, to Robin Haase.

Australian Open champion Maria Sharapova beat Galina Voskoboeva, 6-4, 4-6, 6-1, top-seeded Ana Ivanovic beat Olga Govortsova, 6-3, 6-1, and second-seeded Svetlana Kuznetsova edged Nathalie Dechy, 7-5, 7-5, to reach the third round of the Qatar Open in Doha.

Packers put tag on Williams

The Green Bay Packers designated defensive tackle Corey Williams, 27, as their franchise player, preventing him from becoming an unrestricted free agent. It also lets the team continue discussing a long-term contract until July 15.

Green Bay cut tight end Bubba Franks, 30.

The Tennessee Titans made defensive tackle Albert Haynesworth, 26, their franchise player. . . . Tight end Dallas Clark, 28, signed a six-year contract with the Indianapolis Colts, one day after the team put the franchise tag on him. . . . Arizona Cardinals defensive end Bertrand Berry, 32, scheduled to make $4 million next season, agreed to restructure the final year of his contract to avoid being released. . . . The Minnesota Vikings released safety Dwight Smith, 29. . . . Oakland Raiders cornerback Fabian Washington, 24, was released on bond after being arrested at the Bradenton, Fla., home he shares with his girlfriend and charged with domestic battery. . . . Kevin O’Dea joined the New York Jets as special teams coach after spending the last two seasons as Chicago’s assistant special teams coach. He replaces Mike Westhoff.

Red Sox’s Crisp may seek a trade

Coco Crisp, 28, who lost his center field job to rookie Jacoby Ellsbury in the postseason, said he’ll probably ask the Boston Red Sox to trade him if he doesn’t regain his starting job.

Free-agent pitcher Byung-Hyun Kim, 29, and the Pittsburgh Pirates agreed to a one-year, $850,000 contract.

Lidstrom expects to miss three weeks

Detroit Red Wings defenseman Nicklas Lidstrom expects to be sidelined three weeks because of a right knee injury he suffered when he was slammed into the boards earlier this week.

Philadelphia Flyers forward Simon Gagne was told by a concussion specialist to sit out the rest of the season because of lingering symptoms of three concussions suffered this season.

Gordon, crew chief get punished

NASCAR issued a stiff penalty against Sprint Cup driver-owner Robby Gordon of Orange for having an unapproved nose on his Dodge when he arrived in Florida for Sunday’s Daytona 500.

Gordon was penalized 100 championship driver and owner points. His crew chief, Frank Kerr, was suspended for the next six races and fined $100,000. The violation was found in an inspection Feb. 8, the day teams reported to Daytona. Gordon had just switched to Dodges from Fords this season. He finished eighth in the 500.

NASCAR also penalized several drivers and crew chiefs in its Nationwide Series for infractions ahead of last Saturday’s season opener at Daytona. Dale Earnhardt Jr. was docked 50 points because his No. 5 Chevrolet had an unapproved rear spoiler. His crew chief, Chad Walter, also was suspended for the next six races and fined $25,000.

Former Kansas City Chiefs coach Frank Gansz, who has been out of football since 2001, was hired to coach special teams at SMU. . . . Stanford will kick off the football season early and in prime time, playing Oregon State on Aug. 28 on ESPN2. . . . The Ohio Supreme Court declined to hear Ohio State’s appeal of fired basketball coach Jim O’Brien’s lawsuit against the university that won him $2.2 million plus interest. . . . Unbeaten super-middleweight world champion Joe Calzaghe, appearing in Los Angeles to promote his April 19 fight against Bernard Hopkins, said he wants to fight only once more, against unbeaten middleweight champion Kelly Pavlik, and then retire. . . . Former heavyweight champion Joe Louis heads a list of 25 inductees who will be enshrined June 21 into the California Boxing Hall of Fame.
