County Auditor-Controller J. Tyler McCauley announced Monday that he plans to retire March 31, ending a 37-year career as a county auditor.

McCauley, 60, of Burbank, started working for the county in 1970 and rose up through the ranks until he was appointed by the Board of Supervisors to run the county’s auditing department in May 2000.

McCauley’s agency is responsible for auditing county departments; investigating allegations of abuse and fraud leveled against employees; monitoring the books for the county’s $22 billion budget; and cutting checks to vendors and the county’s 100,000 employees.
