Werth makes sure Diamondbacks pay
PHILADELPHIA -- The Arizona Diamondbacks decided to pitch to Jayson Werth with the game on the line Friday night, and Werth was ready.
Werth hit a game-ending run-scoring single in the 12th inning, and the Philadelphia Phillies won, 6-5, in a matchup of division leaders.
“I was happy to get the hit and get us out of here,” said Werth, who had three hits.
So Taguchi led off the 12th with a single to left. Chris Coste then sacrificed him to second. Connor Robertson intentionally walked Jimmy Rollins to get to Werth, who singled to center.
“We made some mistakes early on, but our bats came alive at the end,” Arizona Manager Bob Melvin said. “They had one more big hit than we did.”
Ryan Howard hit his major league-leading 28th homer for the Phillies in the second inning, extending his hitting streak to 14 games.
