Gov. asks UC to run King-Harbor

Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger held a meeting at his Santa Monica office Tuesday to ask the leadership of the University of California to begin talks with L.A. County to take over the shuttered Martin Luther King Jr.-Harbor Hospital.

“These discussions should begin with the county outlining their proposals for addressing governance, financing, seismic safety and medical education -- issues that must be addressed to reopen the hospital,” Schwarzenegger said in a statement after the meeting.

In attendance were UC Provost Wyatt “Rory” Hume, Supervisor Yvonne B. Burke, Supervisor Zev Yaroslavsky, County Chief Executive William T. Fujioka and the governor’s top health advisors. Yaroslavsky, who has called the UC system “the last, best hope” for reopening King-Harbor, said in an interview that the meeting with the governor “could not have gone better.”
