Open + Finals: Simple as ABC

What a Father’s Day treat: The final round of the U.S. Open on Sunday on NBC is scheduled to end just in time for the Lakers and Boston Celtics in Game 5 of the NBA Finals on ABC at 6 p.m.

“After you have given your dad that eighth straight striped tie, I think you should hand over the remote,” said Dan Hicks, the host of NBC’s golf coverage.

And it appears Tiger Woods probably will be in contention at Torrey Pines. Woods rebounded from a double bogey on his first hole Thursday with three birdies and shot a 72. He’s only four strokes behind going into today’s second round.

By the way, first-round leader Justin Hicks, who plays on the Nationwide Tour, is not related to Dan Hicks.

Phil Mickelson, who again will be in the same group with Woods and Adam Scott, is in the hunt as well after a 71.

Today’s coverage begins on ESPN at 10 a.m., switches to NBC at noon and is back on ESPN from 2-7 p.m. Over the weekend, the coverage on NBC begins at 1 p.m. Saturday and noon Sunday.

Of Woods and Mickelson playing in the same group, NBC’s Johnny Miller said in a conference call this week that he had talked to Mickelson about it.

“I can’t say that he acted like he was too thrilled about it, but he knows how to play with Tiger and he wants this championship more than any other,” Miller said.

On-course reporter Mark Rolfing said, “I really do believe they did this for the fans, not for television.”

College World Series, Saturday and Sunday, 11 a.m. and 4 p.m., ESPN. With UC Irvine getting knocked out by Louisiana State on Monday night, Stanford and Fresno State are the teams representing California in the eight-day World Series. The Cardinal plays Florida State on Saturday at 11 a.m., and the Bulldogs face Rice on Sunday at 11 a.m. Radio coverage of the College World Series can be heard on Sirius Satellite Radio’s Channel 119.

Baseball, Dodgers at Detroit, Saturday, 12:45 p.m., Channel 11. Brad Penny is the probable starter for the Dodgers. Fox commentator Eric Karros, who will work the game with play-by-play announcer Dick Stockton, said, “I can’t believe Brad Penny will continue to be this bad the rest of the way. There is nothing wrong with him physically, so he just has to get on a roll.”

Baseball, New York Mets at Angels, Monday, 7 p.m., FSN West and Prime Ticket. The Angels’ home game against Atlanta Sunday at 5 p.m. is on ESPN, but the Monday game is of note because there will be traditional coverage on FSN West and dugout view, low-level coverage on Prime Ticket. It was first tried on an Angels-Toronto game last season.

Bill Macdonald, who is back at work after undergoing treatment for prostate cancer, will host the dugout view coverage on Prime Ticket.

Note: On June 18, DirecTV will move FSN West to Channel 692 and Prime Ticket to 694.

Track & field, Division I Men’s and Women’s NCAA Championships, Saturday, 1 p.m., Channel 2. Announcing the coverage from Drake Stadium in Des Moines will be Ian Eagle, Dwight Stones and Ato Boldon. There is also coverage on CBS College Sports Network today at 5 p.m.
