Shooting victims flee into U.S.

At least three people, two of them gunshot victims, ran across the U.S. border seeking medical treatment after they were fired on in Mexico.

Deputies from the San Diego County Sheriff’s Department’s Campo Station responded to a radio call Friday reporting that the gunshot victims were near California Highway 94 near Mountain Empire Recreation Center, said Lt. Larry Nesbit.

Nesbit said one person was shot in the upper left leg, another suffered a bullet graze to the head and a third had a broken arm. One person was airlifted to a hospital and two others were taken by ambulance.

Nesbit said the shooting occurred about 10:40 p.m. Friday in Mexico. “We still don’t know the motive for the shooting,” Nesbit said.

Travis Kusman, an emergency medical official, said there was a report of “15 to 20 migrants who were confronted by a group of armed assailants pushing them into the brush and forcing them into the direction of the U.S. border.”

Kusman, operations manager for American Medical Response, said several agencies, including the California Highway Patrol and border agents, responded.

U.S. Customs and Border Protection officials said Mexican military officials arrested two suspects and found one person fatally shot in Mexico.

No other victims were found after an aerial search. Further information about the three victims and their conditions was not known.
