Nadal takes care of Roddick in London

French Open champion Rafael Nadal defeated third-seeded Andy Roddick, 7-5, 6-4, Saturday to reach the Queen’s Club final in London for the first time.

The top-seeded Nadal is trying to become the first Spaniard in 36 years to win a grass-court tournament. Andres Gimeno won at Eastbourne in 1972.

Nadal will face second-seeded Novak Djokovic in today’s final. Djokovic defeated fourth-seeded David Nalbandian, 6-1, 6-0.

“After winning Roland Garros I never thought I could play this final,” Nadal said. “I [am] feeling comfortable on grass. The important thing that’s helping me a lot, I am serving very well.”

Top-ranked Roger Federer extended his record winning streak on grass to 58 matches with a 6-1, 6-4 victory over Nicolas Kiefer in the semifinals of the Gerry Weber Open at Halle, Germany.

In today’s final, he will play Philipp Kohlschreiber, who defeated second-seeded James Blake, 6-3, 7-5.

Top-seeded Nikolay Davydenko and second-seeded Tommy Robredo reached the final at the Warsaw Open with straight-set victories. Davydenko beat Fabio Fognini, 6-2, 6-3, while Robredo defeated Juan Monaco, 6-4, 6-4.

Florida State men, LSU women win NCAA titles

Walter Dix won his third consecutive 200-meter title and led Florida State to its third consecutive men’s team crown at the NCAA Division I championships at Des Moines.

The Seminoles finished with 52 points. Louisiana State and Auburn tied for second with 44. The LSU women edged defending champion Arizona State for the women’s title. The Tigers had 67 points, the Sun Devils 63.

Dix held off 100-meter champion Richard Thompson of LSU to win in 20.40. Thompson was second in 20.44.

COLLEGE BASEBALL

Stanford’s 11-run ninth finishes Florida State

Brent Milleville’s three-run homer highlighted Stanford’s record-tying 11-run ninth inning and the Cardinal beat Florida State, 16-5, in the opening game of the College World Series at Rosenblatt Stadium in Omaha.

The Cardinal’s big inning came after the Seminoles tied the score at 5-5 on Jason Stidham’s two-out, three-run homer in the bottom of the eighth.

Stanford (40-22-2) will play Monday against Georgia (42-23-1), which scored four runs in the ninth inning -- two on Miami closer Carlos Gutierrez’s throwing error -- to beat the top-ranked Hurricanes, 7-4.

Florida State (54-13) will play Miami (52-10) Monday in an elimination game.

MOTOR RACING

Logano makes history with Nationwide victory

Joey Logano became the youngest winner in NASCAR Nationwide Series history, cruising to victory at Kentucky Speedway in Sparta.

The 18-year-old Logano, making his third series start, took the lead from Kyle Busch with 53 laps left and went on to win in his Toyota after Busch spun out his Toyota with 37 laps to go.

Logano, at 18 years 21 days old, broke the age record of 18 years 10 months 26 days set by Casey Atwood in 1999.

Erik Darnell, in a Ford, beat Johnny Benson by 0.005 of a second in the NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series race at Michigan International Speedway.

It was the closest finish under electronic timing and the second closest in series history. Butch Miller beat Mike Skinner by 0.001 of a second at Colorado National Speedway in July 1995.

Travis Thirkettle won the first race of the NASCAR ACDelco Super Late Model twin 40-lap feature races at Toyota Speedway in Irwindale and Nick Joanides won the second race. They each started from the pole position in the races they won leading all laps.

MISCELLANY

Brazil beats U.S. women in volleyball

The fourth-ranked U.S. women’s volleyball team lost to top-ranked Brazil, 25-16, 25-20, 25-18, 20-25, 15-8, at Colorado Springs, Colo., in an exhibition that was predetermined to go to five sets to evaluate players for the Olympics.

UCLA’s Ben Olson is among the 26 senior college quarterbacks who have made the first cut to be considered for the 2008 Johnny Unitas Golden Arm Award. Also on the list were Arizona State’s Rudy Carpenter and California’s Nate Longshore.

Trevor Bauer, a right-handed pitcher from Newhall Hart who was 12-0 this season as a junior, has decided to graduate in December, skip his senior season and enroll at UCLA in January to play for the Bruins.
