* No. 4 Washington State 71, No. 13 Winthrop 40: The fourth-seeded Cougars, behind 19 points and eight rebounds from Aron Baynes, broke away from a halftime tie to whip the Eagles (22-12). Baynes, who packs 270 pounds on his 6-foot-10 frame, made all nine of his shots, three of them rim-rattling dunks in the first half. Washington State (25-8) then clamped down in the second half, outscoring Winthrop, 42-11. Kyle Weaver and Robbie Cowgill each scored 14 and Derrick Low had 11 for the Cougars. Taj McCullough had 17 points for Winthrop, which pulled off an upset of Notre Dame in the opening round of the tournament last year. But any chance of another stunner ended with the Cougars controlling play in the second half. Washington State led 65-34 at one point.

* No. 5 Notre Dame 68, No. 12 George Mason 50: Luke Harangody had 18 points and 14 rebounds to lead the Fighting Irish (25-7) to their first tournament victory in five years. The 12th-seeded Patriots (23-11) had two starters left from their magical run to the Final Four in 2006. One of those players, Will Thomas, had a great game -- 10 for 14 for 25 points and seven rebounds -- but the other, Folarin Campbell, made only one of 12 shots and finished with four points. This game got out of hand during a 14-minute stretch of the first half in which the Patriots made only two of 18 shots and watched an early 7-6 lead turn into a 29-12 deficit. The team looked winded at times, maybe from the altitude, maybe from trying to go toe to toe with a bigger, better team for 40 exhausting minutes.
