Dolphins might split with Taylor

Miami Dolphins Coach Tony Sparano said Wednesday that Jason Taylor isn’t expected to take part in any team activities through training camp and signaled the team is ready to move on without the six-time Pro Bowl defensive end.

The revelation came less than 24 hours after Taylor finished second to Kristi Yamaguchi in the finals of “Dancing With the Stars” in Los Angeles.

“I’m glad we know this. We’ve gotten the information, and that’s important,” Sparano said after a voluntary mini-camp. “I know that Jason is not going to be in any mini-camps, and I know that right now Jason is not going to be at training camp.

“So that’s what we know. Jason’s a player under contract with the Miami Dolphins. He knows that. Both parties are well aware of the information. That’s all I’m going to say about it. . . . We need to discuss the current players on our team right now that have been busting their butt for nine weeks here.”

Cleveland Browns defensive back Daven Holly could be lost for the season after suffering cartilage and ligament damage in the left knee while defending a pass during a team workout Tuesday. . . . New Orleans Saints defensive end Will Smith did not attend a training session, apparently because he is unhappy with his contract.

U.S. beats Argentina in World Team Cup

Wayne Odesnik and Bobby Reynolds defeated Lucas Arnold and Sebastian Prieto, 6-3, 6-7 (5), 10-7, in doubles to lead the United States past Argentina, 2-1, in a Red Group match of the World Team Cup at Duesseldorf, Germany.

Top-seeded Elena Dementieva defeated Liana Ungur, 6-2, 7-6 (4), in the second round of the clay-court Istanbul Cup in Turkey and advanced to play Jill Craybas, who defeated Vania King, 6-4, 6-2.

Big Brown trainer criticizes Prado

Big Brown trainer Rick Dutrow Jr. had some harsh words for jockey Edgar Prado, who often rides for him but was aboard a competitor during the Preakness on Saturday.

Asked to elaborate on comments made after Big Brown’s win, Dutrow suggested that Prado, on longshot Riley Tucker, needlessly tried to block Big Brown, who heads into the Belmont Stakes with a shot at the Triple Crown. Prado, just elected to the Hall of Fame, said he did nothing inappropriate.

Mayweather Jr. gets favorable court ruling

A U.S. District Court judge in Las Vegas issued a temporary restraining order Tuesday to stop “an entity of unknown origin” called Atlanta Sports & Entertainment Marketing from using the domain name “floydmayweather.net” and the name and likeness of boxer Floyd Mayweather Jr. on the website.

The judge set a May 28 hearing on a preliminary injunction, ordered the domain name frozen.

Angel “Memo” Heredia, an admitted steroids dealer, testified that he set up Marion Jones with a three-drug cocktail of banned substances to boost her bid to win five track and field medals at the 2000 Olympic Games in Sydney, Australia.

Heredia said track coach Trevor Graham asked him to overnight mail the oxygen-boosting EPO, growth hormone and insulin for Jones’ use. Graham is on trial in San Francisco after pleading not guilty to three charges of lying to federal agents about his relationship with Heredia.

Heredia also testified that, at the coach’s behest, he sold banned drugs to Olympic gold-medal sprinters Antonio Pettigrew, Jerome Young, Tim Montgomery and Dennis Mitchell.

Pettigrew, who won a gold medal in Sydney and never tested positive during competition, is expected to testify today against Graham.

MISCELLANY

USC, UCLA remain tied for lead in golf

USC’s Belen Mozo shot a one-under-par 71 to take over the individual lead and help the Trojans remain in a first-place tie with UCLA before high winds suspended play during the second round of the NCAA women’s golf championships at Albuquerque.

The Trojans and Bruins are at eight-over 584. Mozo is at four-under 140 for a one-stroke lead over Arizona State’s Azahara Munoz. UCLA’s Tiffany Joh had the best round of the day, a three-under 69.

Pepperdine junior outfielder Eric Thames was selected West Coast Conference player of the year after leading the conference with a .529 batting average.

Nine-time All-Star and 19-year NHL veteran Jeremy Roenick agreed to a one-year contract to return to the San Jose Sharks.

The Summer X Games has added women’s motocross to its slate of new events. This year’s Games will be July 31 to Aug. 3 at Staples Center and the Home Depot Center.
