Police chief announces retirement after 15 years

Police Chief Patrick McKinley has announced that he will retire as head of the city’s 160 officer-department in May, officials said.

McKinley, 67, has served as chief for nearly 15 years. He was hired to replace Police Chief Philip A. Goehring, who retired after nearly three decades of service.

McKinley “reinvigorated the department,” said City Manager Chris Meyer. “It’s going to be tough to find somebody to follow in his footsteps.”

McKinley joined the Fullerton Police Department in 1993. He previously worked for the Los Angeles Police Department for nearly three decades.

In Fullerton, he focused on modernizing equipment, including helping design an equipment belt that is said to reduce the risk of back injuries.

A recruitment firm will be hired and begin work in January to find a replacement for McKinley, officials said.
