State Sen. Sheila Kuehl (D-Santa Monica) is being forced by term limits to leave her elected post, but outgoing Senate President Pro Tem Don Perata appointed her Tuesday to a $132,000 seat on the state Integrated Waste Management Board. Kuehl has a reputation as a tough environmentalist, and she has been chairwoman of the Senate Natural Resources and Water Committee.

Kuehl’s term in the Legislature ends Sunday; she was elected to the Senate in 2000. Her new appointment runs through Jan. 1, 2011.

The California Integrated Waste Management Board develops procedures for review of county and city source reduction and recycling elements and countywide integrated waste management plans, as well as identifying markets for recyclable materials.
