A brush fire of undetermined origin Wednesday has burned more than 1,000 acres in a remote area of the sprawling Marine Corps base, authorities said.

No structures were threatened, officials said. The fire erupted in the late afternoon and by 8 p.m. was burning out of control and being battled by dozens of firefighters and 20 brush rigs. Before sunset, air tankers and helicopters also fought the blaze.

The base golf course was evacuated soon after the fire began. Smoke was visible in both northern San Diego County and southern Orange County. The fire began on a site where Marines are trained in ordnance disposal.
