Orange County arts volunteer
Vesta Curry, 89, an arts philanthropist and volunteer for several Orange County arts organizations, died Sept. 29 of natural causes at her home in Laguna Beach, according to her son, Dr. Frank Curry.
In her more than 20 years as a volunteer, Curry served on dozens of committees, most of them related to community outreach and education programs for the Orange County Performing Arts Center and the Pacific Symphony orchestra.
She was honored in 2002 as the year’s outstanding volunteer by Arts Orange County, a nonprofit arts council.
At most of the fundraising galas she attended, Curry wore a hat from her collection of nearly 100. Many of them spoke to the theme of the evening, such as the mound of feathers she chose for a Chinese New Year celebration to mark the year of the rooster with the Pacific Symphony in 1993.
Curry was born Jan. 5, 1919, in Ness City, Kan., attended Kansas State University and moved to Los Angeles in 1940.
