Westbrook out against 49ers

Running back Brian Westbrook will sit out his second game in three weeks when the Philadelphia Eagles play the 49ers on Sunday at San Francisco. Westbrook broke two ribs in the Eagles’ 23-17 loss to Washington last Sunday, though he kept playing.

“Brian wants to go. He’s in the mind-set that he wants to play, but it’s a decision that I’ve got to make,” Eagles Coach Andy Reid said Friday.

Cincinnati Bengals Coach Marvin Lewis says quarterback Carson Palmer will not start against the New York Jets because of a sore right elbow, but that he could play. Backup Ryan Fitzpatrick will get his second start of the season for the Bengals.

In other news for the Jets, Coach Eric Mangini and his wife, Julie, gave their newborn third son -- Zack Brett Mangini -- a middle name in honor of quarterback Brett Favre, who turned 39 Friday, the same day Zack was born.

Despite not making a single throw in practice this week because of the toll it would take on his sprained right shoulder, quarterback Aaron Rodgers is prepared to start for Green Bay at Seattle, Packers Coach Mike McCarthy said.

For the Seahawks, quarterback Matt Hasselbeck has a sore right knee and hasn’t received clearance to play, meaning Charlie Frye will probably start against the Packers, Coach Mike Holmgren said.

San Diego Chargers wide receiver Chris Chambers was listed as doubtful because of a sprained left ankle and may sit out against the New England Patriots.

Cleveland Browns tight end Kellen Winslow will spend a second night in the hospital because of an undisclosed illness that could keep him out of Monday night’s game against the New York Giants.

The NFL fined the Minnesota Vikings’ Antoine Winfield $10,000 for his celebration of a touchdown on Monday night against the New Orleans Saints. Winfield returned a blocked field goal for a score, then jumped onto the goal post and slid down it like a fire pole. Vikings linebacker Chad Greenway was fined $7,500 for his face-mask pull of Reggie Bush even though referee Ed Hochuli’s crew did not flag him for a penalty. . . . Arizona Cardinals strong safety Adrian Wilson was fined $25,000 by the NFL for a hit Sunday on Buffalo Bills quarterback Trent Edwards. . . . Ronnie Brown and two Miami Dolphins teammates were fined $10,000 each by the NFL for excessive celebrating as they did a dance shuffle in the end zone.
