Kentucky’s defense triggers 27-2 rout of Louisville

Kentucky returned two Louisville fumbles for touchdowns and set up another score with an interception in the Wildcats’ 27-2 victory Sunday in the Governor’s Cup at Louisville.

“We thought we had a good defense and we do,” Kentucky Coach Rich Brooks said. “Our defense took it upon themselves to score points. Our defense kept making play after play after play.”

Kentucky forced five turnovers and stuffed Louisville’s retooled offense, playing with the kind of tenacity Brooks said the Wildcats would need early in the season while the offense found its footing.

Louisville failed to score a touchdown for the first time since a shutout loss to Florida State in 2000.

Josh Smith returned a kickoff 93 yards for a touchdown and Colorado beat Colorado State, 38-17, at Invesco Field. Darrell Scott, the highly regarded tailback from St. Bonaventure High, gained 50 yards and scored a touchdown in 12 carries for the Buffaloes.

Willie Tuitama and Nic Grigsby combined for 348 yards in one half to lead Arizona’s 70-0 rout of Idaho late Saturday night in a rainy opener at Tucson that was delayed an hour by lightning.

It was the highest-scoring game for the Wildcats since a record 74-0 victory in 1921 over the Texas College of Mines and Metallurgy. Tuitama threw for three touchdowns to break the school record for career touchdown passes with 47, one more than Tom Tunnicliffe had from 1980 to 1983.

Texas defensive tackle Lamarr Houston was suspended for Saturday’s game at Texas El Paso after his arrest on suspicion of misdemeanor of drunk driving a few hours after the Longhorns beat Florida Atlantic, 52-10.

Georgia defensive tackle Jeff Owens will sit out the rest of the season with a knee injury.

Coach Mark Richt said that Owens tore the anterior cruciate ligament in his right knee in Georgia’s 45-21 victory Saturday over Georgia Southern.

Oregon offensive tackle Fenuki Tupou missed the Ducks’ win over Washington because he accepted a meal and received $100 from the representative of a professional sport management firm, the university said.
