KNBC leads local Emmys with eight

The 60th annual Los Angeles Area Emmy Awards were distributed Saturday evening and KNBC-TV Channel 4 won eight to lead the pack.

Noncommercial KCET-TV Channel 28 won six awards. KCBS-TV Channel 2 and KCAL-TV Channel 9, which share news-gathering operations, won five together.

Separately from its news station sibling, KCAL won the Emmy for best daily newscast over 35 minutes for its nightly 10 p.m. broadcast.

KTLA-TV’s Channel 5 morning show won for best daytime newscast.

And KCBS won its fourth consecutive statuette for regularly scheduled daily newscast 35 minutes or less for “CBS2 News at 11 p.m.”

No station in the Emmys’ 60-year history had achieved a four-year streak.

KNBC’s Mary Harris won as best news writer for the third year in a row.

The ceremony was held at the Academy of Television Arts & Sciences’ Leonard H. Goldenson Theatre in North Hollywood.

* Medical, cultural and social news story (multi-report): “Seeing With Sound,” KTTV

* Education: “Heal the Bay,” KCBS/KCAL

* Crime/social issues: “Forgotten Neighbors,” KNBC
