Kim leads Garcia by two at Tour Championship

Anthony Kim and Sergio Garcia did enough Friday at the Tour Championship to set up a Ryder Cup rematch.

Kim had to settle for a one-under-par 69 on Friday at Atlanta, making bogey from the bunker on the final hole, to take a two-shot lead over Garcia and put them in the final pairing only six days after their leadoff singles match at the Ryder Cup. Kim won that match, 5 and 4, and the Americans followed him to victory at Valhalla.

Kim was at seven-under 133, but the momentum might lie with Garcia. He was four over through his first six holes of the tournament, rallied for a 70, then followed that with nearly flawless play for a 65. Phil Mickelson ran off five birdies over the last seven holes for a 68 that put him three shots behind.

Bruce Fleisher, Dana Quigley, Eduardo Romero, Andy Bean, Don Pooley and Chip Beck shot four-under 68s to share the first-round lead in the Champions Tour’s SAS Championship at Cary, N.C.

Lorena Ochoa shot her second straight five-under 67 to move within a stroke of leader Janice Moodie halfway through the Navistar LPGA Classic at Prattville, Ala.

Technical violation costs Montoya

Less than an hour after Juan Pablo Montoya celebrated his first NASCAR Sprint Cup pole, it was taken away from him because of a technical violation at Kansas City, Kan.

NASCAR spokesman Ramsey Poston said Montoya’s fast lap was disqualified because a post-qualifying inspection discovered his rear shock absorbers exceeded the maximum gas pressure allowed.

That moved two-time reigning Cup champion Jimmie Johnson up to the pole, with Montoya’s No. 42 Chip Ganassi Racing Dodge moved to 42nd in the 43-car field for Sunday’s race.

New Clipper Jason Williams retires

Jason Williams announced his retirement, ending his 10-year NBA career less than two months after signing with the Clippers.

Williams, who helped the Miami Heat win the NBA title in 2006, averaged 11.4 points, 6.3 assists and shot 39.6% from the field for his career.

Houston Rockets forward Shane Battier will be sidelined up to four weeks and miss most of the exhibition season because of an inflammation in his left foot.

Gilbert Arenas and the Washington Wizards were fined $15,000 apiece by the NBA after he ducked out of the team’s annual preseason media day, avoiding any discussion of the operation on his left knee.

Janel McCarville scored 17 points to help the New York Liberty hold off the Detroit Shock, 60-56, in the opener of the WNBA’s Eastern Conference finals at New York.

American goalkeeper joins Celtic

Goalkeeper Dominic Cervi, 22, will become the fourth American in the Scottish Premier League after agreeing to join Celtic.

He was part of the U.S. squad at the Beijing Olympics last month.

Midfielders Maurice Edu and DaMarcus Beasley are at Celtic’s Glasgow rival Rangers, and another midfielder, Michael Videira, joined Hamilton this month.

Texas businessman Ellis Short bought a significant stake in Sunderland, the English Premier League told the Associated Press. Premier League clubs Manchester United, Liverpool, Aston Villa are also owned by Americans.

Connecticut defeats Louisville

Lawrence Wilson returned an interception 45 yards for a touchdown with 2:45 remaining to give Connecticut a 26-21 road victory over Louisville.

Donald Brown ran for 190 yards and a touchdown for the Huskies (5-0, 1-0 Big East).

Louisville (2-2, 0-1) moved the ball effortlessly at times and piled up 508 yards of total offense but squandered several opportunities to put the game away.

A state judge in Louisville, Ky., ordered a sealed bid sale of a minority interest in 2007 Horse of the Year Curlin to settle a $42-million judgment.

The ruling comes in a civil suit against Curlin’s original owners, attorneys William Gallion and Shirley Cunningham Jr., who are accused of bilking clients out of millions in a $200-million settlement over the diet-drug fen-phen.
