Relatives of a 6-year-old girl struck by a bullet fired into a Los Angeles home said Sunday that the child is expected to recover from her injuries.
The girl is being treated at Los Angeles County-USC Medical Center. It is unknown when she will be released; doctors have yet to remove the bullet, a family member said.
“She just woke up and started talking last night, and she talked to her mom,” said Martha Hernandez, the girl’s aunt. “She told her mom that she just wants to come back home.”
The shooting occurred at 9:40 p.m. Friday in the 1000 block of East 22nd Street, south of downtown. Police said suspects walked up to the home and began firing. The girl was struck in the back.
Hernandez said the girl will “be able to walk in time.”
Investigators are trying to determine whether the attack was gang-related. No arrests have been made.
