Wakefield tops A’s for 11th victory
First-time All-Star Tim Wakefield earned his American League-leading 11th victory, and David Ortiz homered and drove in four runs to lead the Boston Red Sox over the Oakland Athletics, 5-4, on Wednesday night.
Wakefield (11-3) left to a standing ovation in the seventh inning in his final scheduled start before the break. The 42-year-old knuckleballer is 9-0 in his last 11 starts at Fenway Park.
J.D. Drew led off the sixth with a home run that made it 1-1. Ortiz hit a three-run homer later in the inning.
Wakefield gave up three earned runs and 10 hits. He struck out eight and walked one. Jonathan Papelbon got his 22nd save.
