NASCAR: Mayfield tests positive again STICKING TO IT

Jeremy Mayfield tested positive again for methamphetamine, NASCAR said, igniting another round of denials from the driver, who angrily accused the sanctioning body of paying his stepmother to lie about his alleged past drug use.

The positive result from a July 6 random test was included in a U.S. District Court filing Wednesday that asked the federal judge who lifted Mayfield’s drug suspension to reinstate the ban. The filing included an affidavit from Mayfield’s stepmother, Lisa, who said she witnessed the driver using methamphetamine at least 30 times over seven years.

“I don’t trust anything NASCAR does, anything Dr. David Black does, never have, never will,” Mayfield told the Associated Press in a phone interview. Black is the administrator for NASCAR’s drug-testing program.

“And they picked the wrong woman to use against me because [she’s] trash and has got nothing on me but lies.”

Suggs signs $63-million deal

Baltimore Ravens linebacker Terrell Suggs signed a six-year, $63-million contract Wednesday, making him the highest-paid linebacker in NFL history.

Had Suggs not signed, he would have played the season for $10.17 million.

Brett Favre acknowledged he’s “running out of time” to decide whether he’ll play for the Minnesota Vikings this season. The quarterback told the Associated Press that he’ll give the Vikings an answer on whether he’ll play by the July 30 start of training camp.

Henry sentenced to three years

A federal judge in Billings, Mont., sentenced former NFL player Travis Henry to three years in prison for financing a drug ring that moved cocaine between Colorado and Montana. Henry, 30, of Frostproof, Fla., was arrested by federal drug agents last October -- just a few months after the running back’s release from the Denver Broncos.

A complaint filed with a police sex-offense unit by Karen Sypher, the woman accused of trying to extort Louisville men’s basketball Coach Rick Pitino, won’t be prosecuted because it lacks supporting evidence, a Kentucky prosecutor said. Sypher has pleaded not guilty to federal charges of trying to extort money from Pitino and lying to the FBI.

Estudiantes beats Cruzeiro for title

Mauro Boselli scored in the 78th minute as Estudiantes of Argentina came from behind to defeat Brazil’s Cruzeiro, 2-1, at Belo Horizonte, Brazil, and win its fourth Copa Libertadores title. The teams played to a 0-0 tie in the first leg last week.

Cuauhtemoc Blanco had a goal and an assist to lead the Chicago Fire into the final of the SuperLiga with a 2-1 win over the New England Revolution at Foxborough, Mass. In the final, Chicago will play UANL Tigres, a 3-2 winner over Santos Laguna.

Gasquet escapes lengthy ban

Richard Gasquet escaped a lengthy doping ban when the International Tennis Federation’s tribunal panel ruled that he inadvertently took cocaine by kissing a woman in a nightclub. Gasquet, 23, was cleared to resume playing after completing a 2 1/2 -month ban.

Olympics dinner at the Coliseum

The floor of the Coliseum will be a fitting site for a commemorative 25-year Olympic dinner Saturday night.

The dinner, sponsored by the L.A.
