Brockman scores 20 as Washington wins

Jon Brockman scored 20 points, Isaiah Thomas sparked a decisive second-half spurt with nine points and 13th-ranked Washington defeated Stanford, 85-73, in the Pacific-10 tournament quarterfinals Thursday at Staples Center.

Washington (25-7), which has won six in a row, will play 23rd-ranked Arizona State (23-8) in today’s semifinals. The Huskies swept the regular-season series, winning the second game by three points in overtime.

“Another tough opponent,” Huskies Coach Lorenzo Romar said. “Arizona State just plays us to the wire. We’re going to have to do a great job of turning the page. This group has been fantastic in keeping the focus.”

Washington, the tournament’s top-seeded team, has won nine of its last 10.

The Huskies won the Pac-10 regular-season title outright for the first time since 1953, and are going for their first conference tournament championship since 2005.

Anthony Goods scored 26 points for the Cardinal (18-13).

No. 23 Arizona State 68, Arizona 56 -- Pac-10 player of the year James Harden had 27 points and eight rebounds for the Sun Devils, who put the Wildcats’ long NCAA tournament streak in jeopardy.

Ty Abbott scored 11 points and Jeff Pendergraph had 10 points and nine rebounds for Arizona State (23-8).

Jordan Hill had 20 points and 13 rebounds for Arizona (19-13), which has appeared in 24 consecutive NCAA tournaments.

That is the longest active streak and second-longest behind the 27-year streak by North Carolina from 1975 to 2001.

The Wildcats, losers of five of their last six games, will find out Sunday if their streak is extended. Arizona sweated out the selections last year before drawing a No. 10 seeding and losing to West Virginia in the first round.

Nic Wise added 18 points for Arizona. Chase Budinger was held to eight points, shooting three for 15, including one for nine from three-point range.
