Six local students were among the first-place winners of the 30th annual College Television Awards, handed out Saturday night by the Academy of Television Arts & Sciences Foundation.

Julie Sagalowsky and Josh C. Feldman of UCLA won in the comedy category for “Lucy: A Period Piece,” about a teenager aching for puberty, while Daniel M. Harrich of the American Film Institute in L.A. captured top drama honors for “Acholiland,” about a United Nations worker in Uganda.

In the music category, Nicole Taubman of Cal State Northridge teamed with Chris Buongiorno and Derek Villarreal of the Art Center College of Design in Pasadena to win one of the music categories for “Mechanical Hands Electric Heart -- Emergency Broadcast.”

They and the winners in seven other categories -- from Columbia, Brigham Young, Northwestern, University of North Carolina, Southern Illinois, University of Florida and Montana State -- were awarded $2,000 each in ceremonies at Culver Studios.

The foundation said it selected the winners from 712 entries from 214 schools in 42 states -- nearly double the number of entries from last year.
